Connection and Mindfulness for Older Adults

One of the consequences of the pandemic has been increased social isolation for older adults, and feelings of chronic loneliness.

We worked with Claremont in North London to deliver an online mindfulness course for their members in Winter 2020. This pilot has helped us to shape a new 6 week course tailored to the needs of older adults.

How to Live Creatively: Mindfulness Tools for the Everyday includes guided meditations and exercises to learn key mindfulness techniques. There’s home practice each week, and a WhatsApp forum so people can stay connected. For those not on Whatsapp, there are CDs of meditations that we send by post.

We are working with local East London and UK-wide organisations to help better serve older adults. Organisations we are connected to include the Globe Project, Bow Haven, and Open Doors, and many local GP surgeries.

What we offer
  • Discussion, chat and a chance to check in on home practice.
  • Presentations by senior mindfulness teachers and question and answer sessions
  • Tea and light refreshments
  • Mindful Movement
  • Exercises in Mindfulness and Compassion
  • Relaxation

The course takes place either online or in-person, following strict Covid-19 health and safety guidelines.

The Breathing Space London mindfulness venue is kitted out with mats, blocks, blankets, eyebags, and bolsters. There is a relaxing and informal adjacent tea room.

Previous participants say:

"I have benefitted so much from being able to pause, reflect, take in and not feel guilty.”

“The course was brilliant because I found others spoke so honestly about their experiences, it made me feel safe so that I could also share my own experiences. I found that very powerful. There was a lot of friendliness.”

"There was proper time for relaxation. We aren't taught that this is actually healthy for us!"

“A person is there to tell us once a week what will work, and guide us so kindly, otherwise we are just doing this on our own. This was very helpful.”
